Why Should You Care?
First and foremost, dual core technology is going to improve the speed and performance of your computing equipment. Depending on whose test results you quote, the latest versions of Intel’s dual core processors show performance improvement from 33 to 40 percent. Pretty significant if you’re an engineer who measures and values small performance improvements, and probably substantial enough that the rest of us can see the difference as well. That means spreadsheets crunch faster, data processes easier and applications run more quickly. If you do a lot of work with multimedia applications, photo processing, encryption, engineering or scientific applications you don’t need to read any further. You’ll want to look for dual core technology loaded in a business platform for your next upgrade.
But if you aren’t a computer-intensive user, improved application performance may not mean that much. What does make this technology relevant to almost everyone in business today is its ability to facilitate your ability to multitask. How many times have you tried to run more than one application at a time and experienced that nagging “freeze” that causes your machine to slow down and even stop running certain tools that you use because it’s simply too much for your processor to handle? Dual core should make that issue a thing of the past, by allowing you to do a better job of performing a variety of tasks at the same time (including using those system tools frequently avoided that help maintain the health of your computer). Dual core will allow you to incorporate more data intensive capabilities into the tasks you perform regularly. For a practical application, think about sales presentation material that incorporates sound and video. You’d certainly stand out from the crowd.
For mobile users who live on the life of their battery, there is good news. The reduced energy consumption in dual core also improves how long you can work without external juice. Obviously the amount you get will be a function of the unit you buy, but there’s a good chance that you can take those short trips without lugging around that second battery to make sure that you don’t lose your work.
Where Can You Learn More?
We continue to look for the newest technology to help you solve business problems. Often, the best source for a clear explanation of the business benefits surrounding dual core and other emerging technology is a qualified local solution provider. You can also visit the web sites of the technology companies who produce dual core technology: Intel and AMD. New technology, properly integrated and implemented, can be a lot easier to understand than many people realize.
