1. Google Yourself. It's not fun but necessary. Google your last name. Google your first and last name. How do you fare? Are you on the first page? Is someone competing with your namesake? Best to get an honest view of your starting point.
So how did I fare? Not bad. I'm nowhere to be found today in a "Karpinski" search -- colonel (former general) Janis Karpinski (no relation) of the Abu Ghraib scandal dominates my last name search. But search for "Rich Karpinski" or "Richard Karpinski" and I do a little bit better. But some of the results seem very random -- a comment I left on a popular blog and on customer service forum. I can do better.
