Mark---I like your article and found everything you said to be true and helpful---much of it lining up with my experience in direct marketing.
My only complaint about the list buying experience, whether direct mail or email, is that is is difficult to find a solid list broker. I've found most of the vendors that I've worked with in the past to be very inexperienced and unhelpful. Many times, I've had to explain to them how it is possible to segregate the data that I'm looking for. I realize that list sellers aren't engineers or programmers, but it would be nice if they were better trained to know what their programmers are capable of.
I would love to find a company that is reliable and knowledgeable. If ever I did, I would tell ALL of my business associates!
