Though I agree that it's time to drive a stake through the heart of cube farms, I disagree that more openness should be the goal. When will companies realize that it's difficult to be productive when employees are forced to suffer though the noise of their coworkers doing their jobs--or worse--not doing them? Each employee should have a door they can close when they need to focus. Clients would flip if they saw the distractions that their contacts experience while trying to solve problems. An environment that allows employees to be able to concentrate is good for the company. Why does nobody get that?
