Small business owners need to constantly be in touch. Indeed, one of the drawbacks of being an entrepreneur is not being able to get away.

Well, the task of going fishing is about to get harder. It appears that more companies are getting deeply into unified communications. Unlike specific technologies such as Wi-Fi and cellular, UC is more of a nebulous collection of products and services. The bottom line is that UC—which is tightly related to "follow me/find me" services—refers to managing communications media in a way that a message, no matter how it is initially received, is delivered in any format necessary.

Thus, a call from an angry customer or an email from a supplier saying that shipment of a key part will be delayed will systematically move from application to application until it is delivered. An email sent to the user's account can move from the desk top PC to mobile email delivered to a smart phone, text messaging, voice, instant messaging and so on.

Of course, small business owners know about each of these services and applications individually. However, they should consider the UC approach of managing them in a coordinated and uniform manner that allows vital messages to reach get though—even if the executive is in the middle of a lake trying to land a bass.
