People may have a tendency to think of new technology as, well, new technology. The reality is that new technology should be thought of as new opportunities.

The latest trend is cell phone video. Broadcasters and Internet companies increasingly are looking to download content—advertisements, programming snippets and, eventually, longer-form products—to cell phones. To anyone born before, say, 1980, this is amazing. But it, and many other innovative things, are in place, in trials or in the heads of engineers.

The bottom line is that small companies should consider marketing and/or advertising on these emerging platforms. Of course, it may be as simple as asking a marketing firm—either your current one or another consulted for this purpose—to see where your company fits in the new media landscape.

Ignoring the new media because it is difficult to understand or seems to "new-fangled" is self defeating. Your customers are using it and, in many cases, your competitors are as well. Don't be left out.
