Email isnít the first thing anyone thinks of when they hear the word ďartistĒÖor the second thing or the third thing or the hundredth thing! After all, art is the most visual of mediums, something that has to be seen and absorbed and appreciated in the flesh and up close. But donít worry, email can help art reach a wider audienceóthrough an email marketing campaign!

Email marketing campaigns are the best way for any artist to spread the word about his or her work. The arts section of newspapers is shrinking, if not outright disappearing, and even with the declining relevance of newspapers, itís expensive to place an ad to tout an upcoming show or appearance. Fortunately for the starving artist, email marketing campaigns are the perfect solution for anyone on a budget.

While nobody is arguing that art has to be seen to be fully understood and appreciated, the truth is the Internet has been giving artists a bigger audience for well over a decade now. A website is one of the best ways for an artist to display images of his or her work and whet the appetite of visitors enough so that they come to the museum or gallery showing to see the real thing up close.

But as good as a website is, itís not as effective as an email marketing campaign! Email marketing, for artists, means an opportunity to define their audience and make sure their art is seen by as many people as possible.

Artist email marketing campaigns are almost as easy to begin as they are to manage. First, an artist should use his or her website to collect email addresses. Place a small prompt on the front page inviting visitors to submit their email addresses so that they can be informed of the artistís latest news, progress and appearances/showings.
