Utility TXU and Current Communications Group said they will offer broadband over power line (BPL) services to homes and businesses in Texas. BPL uses the power infrastructure to provide high speed Internet connectivity. Utilities are interested in BPL for two reasons: In addition to a portion of the broadband revenues, they can use features made possible by the communications gear, such as remote meter reading and instantaneous failure alerts, to operate more efficiently. TXU, the largest power company in the state, will pay Current $150 million over the next decade. The utility will run its "smart grid" technology on the Current network and gain equity in the broadband service provider. The deal covers about 2 million homes and business in the state.
