| What's on *My* Web Desktop? |

As a writer and editor who basically lives his life online, I’m constantly trying to find better, quicker, more efficient ways to work. And lately that means using more and more online tools including a variety of Web office-style applications.
On my Firefox bookmark toolbar, I have a folder I call “Tools”—basically a series of bookmarks that provide me one-click access to tools I use to work every day.
Here’s what’s in it right now and why it’s there:
- Google Reader – I’d drown in information without this RSS reader. I follow countless sites, blogs and information sources everyday. Google Reader—which just finally added a search function this past week—is a god-send.
- Blog Posting – I have a subfolder that includes bookmarks to places I blog: TypePad, WordPress.com and the SmartBiz blog system.
- BackPack – I use 37Signals BackPack service as digital storage for all the projects I’m working on—each project gets a page which can hold files, to-do-lists, documents, pictures and more. I also do my word processing using BackPack’s WriteBoards. I can access all of this from any of the several computers I work on.
- Google Notebook – A neat little app I use to “clip” content I want to use in fairly short order. It has folders, subsections and pages—just like a notebook.
- Delicious – My longer-term bookmark service—not only good for browsing but do a search and I can find things I read and wanted to remember even months ago. Also use Delicious RSS feeds on my blog sidebars to show others what I’m reading.
- Google Browser Synch – A nice little Firefox extension that keeps my bookmarks in synch between my multiple computers. Along with Google Reader, I can work using the same “Web desktop” regardless of which machine I’m on.
- Google Analytics – We use this for SmartBiz—just getting started with it but as nice as costlier services I’ve used in other gigs.
- STDL.org – This is the Web interface into my very good regional library (Schaumburg IL) card catalog. Cheaper than Amazon.
- eFax – I get my incoming faxes into my email and a Web inbox for free using basic eFax service.
- Fax1 – I send faxes from my scanner over the Web for just a few cents per page.
- ATT Unified Messaging – I get my voice mails sent as .avi files to my email inbox—no more checking voice mail.
